Welcome to February and the noticeable increase in daylight hours. I hope this finds everyone doing well and looking towards spring.

It has been a busy couple of months with a very significant event taking place on Monday January 10, 2022.  At their regular meeting, the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly members approved a $2 million appropriation for design development of the facility concept for a Capital Civic Center. The funds will cover the costs for continued refinement of the current concept, first presented in July of 2021, and provide more accurate estimated costs for construction.

 In the coming weeks, CBJ will begin the process of solicitation for architectural services. After a firm has been chosen, community meetings will be scheduled to explore the project as it is being developed. A more detailed explanation of the CBJ process, conceptual elevations and floor plans for the Capital Civic Center is posted on our website, juneaupartnership.org. We encourage you to take a minute to review the materials and if you have any questions please feel free to contact us.  

Meanwhile, the Partnership Board and committees meet regularly and continue to track the progress of the project. We are still at work to secure federal funding for the project as well as contributions from individual donors. As the pandemic starts to taper off we all hope for the return of in-person events and the opportunity to see everyone again.

Pick.Click.Give

When you file for your PFD, don’t forget to Pick.Click.Give to the New JACC. Donations will go toward funding the public/private partnership project of the Capital Civic Center.

Also on the Pick.Click.Give list are our friends at the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council.  The JAHC provides all of the wonderful programs that happen in the current JACC and Centennial Hall, like Wearable Art and First Friday gallery exhibitions.

The deadline to file is March 31, 2022.

Economic Impact of Non-Profit Organizations

The Foraker Group recently released a report highlighting how non-profit organizations impact Alaska’s economy.

There are more than 5,600 nonprofits in our state that create nearly 58,000 jobs with more than $4 billion in wages and salaries.

Arts, culture and humanities non-profits make up about 10% of the 501(c)(3) organizations.

The report spotlights the Alaska Center for Performing Arts (PAC) and the contributions it brings to Anchorage.

“The PAC hosts approximately 200,000 guests in a typical year. Based on 2019 data gathered by the Center for Economic Development, those guests each spend an average of $31.47 in downtown Anchorage on food, shopping, and incidentals, amounting to $9.2 million in economic activity and 111 jobs created outside the PAC.

A Capital Civic Center in Juneau can be expected to contribute to the local economy in the same way.

February Gallery Exhibit

Stop by the Juneau Arts & Culture Center Gallery this month to see a photograph exhibition of Romeo the Wolf Who Came to Juneau.

The 20 photograph collection was curated by Kerry Howard and Matthew Brown. All of the pictures are available to purchase in an online auction that closes February 26, 2022.

The exhibition is part of a month-long series of events organized by the Orpheus Project, including a special Saison of the Wolf blueberry rhubarb saison by Barnaby Brewing.

Join The Partnership for another celebration of Spring into Art!

The second annual event will take place on Saturday, May 7 at Overstreet Park around the whale sculpture.

Bring the whole family to enjoy an afternoon filled with kid-friendly fun with pygmy goats, chickens and maybe even some little bunnies!

Colin Peacock grew up in Tucson, AZ, and is currently residing in the culturally and ecologically rich landscape of Juneau, Alaska.

He is a professionally trained chef with an Associate Chef’s degree from the California Culinary Academy in their Le Cordon Bleu Executive Chefs Program and received a Bachelor of Science from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. He spent more than ten years fundraising and working with sustainable development and conservation biology non-profits as a photographer and scientist.

Colin moved to Alaska seven years ago, where he started the Salt & Soil Marketplace, an online local food marketplace for Southeast Alaska. He continues his support of community development and the arts in his current role as Fundraising Manager for the Partnership’s Capital Campaign Committee.

While his true passion is to be out in the wilderness on water or mountains as much as possible, he can also be found importing and carving opals into gemstones and jewelry on heavy weather days.
